Travel Guide to Copenhagen

Best things to do and see in Copenhagen

Copenhagen: Why go

Copenhagen is one of the world’s most beguiling, easy-going capitals. Its wide boulevards are beautifully elegant, it’s as clean as a whistle, and there’s something overwhelmingly stylish about the whole place. In summer, the parks blossom and the harbour is pure enough to swim in; in winter, the Christmas markets and candlelit bars are wonderfully hygge (a Danish word which loosely translates as ‘cosy’). It’s no surprise that Copenhageners are said to be among the happiest people on Earth.

Stroll along Europe’s longest pedestrianised shopping street, Strøget, and you can’t help but be impressed by the cool design. Illums Bolighus was born here; so were Bang & Olufsen, Hay CPH and Normann Copenhagen. There’s a multitude of charming cafés and top-class eateries, and the famous Nyhavn canal is a perfect spot to people-watch over a coffee. It's easy to explore on foot, and the locals pedal their way around on bikes. They’re friendly and welcoming, and you'll soon feel part of the city, even if you don’t speak a word of Danish (needless to say, their English is flawless).
