This innovative accommodation guide and booking service, now in its 13th year, has built up a 1,400 strong collection of small, well-run and stylish hotels, b&bs and self-catering properties in Britain, Europe and long-haul destinations from Argentina to Vietnam. Most are small and independent - the sort of places you wouldn’t find out about anywhere else, and they range from five-star luxury hotels to converted barges. Each property on the site is inspected and reviewed in full, frank and accurate terms, with detail about the best rooms and features, and reference to any flaws. The site is easy to navigate and thoughtfully ordered so that you can search by country or by interest (there is an 800-strong collection of family-friendly properties for instance). What really sets it apart though is the design. From the moment you click on the home page, you’re drawn into a world of quirky riads, sun-washed seaside hotels and moonlit desert camps. It’s aspirational browsing at its best, though many of the properties are surprisingly affordable and i-escape is liberal with offers of extra nights, or seasonal discounts. This is the travel company I have recommended to friends more than any other.
