From the moment you arrive, you’ll be captivated by the villa’s rustic wooden facade, seamlessly blending into the mountain backdrop. Relax on the sun-drenched terrace, take a dip in the heated pool, or stroll through the lush meadow orchard, picking fresh apples and pears as you find a shady retreat to enjoy the panoramic views.

In warmer months, embark on a hiking or cycling journey from your doorstep, or refresh yourself in nearby Lake Hallstatt – the villa has its own exclusive boathouse on its shores (20 minutes away). Highs

  • A fabulous location for exploring the region all year round – from the lake in summer to the ski slopes in winter as well the mountains and neighbouring picture-postcard towns
  • Outside there's a heated pool (April-October), sun loungers, and a grill kitchen with a fridge and ice machine to create the perfect setting for outdoor dining
  • Those spectacular views over the foothills. And balconies to sit on and watch the sun come up or go down
  • The impressive pool house has a lofty relaxation room (perfect for yoga) as well as a sauna
  • Hallstatt Lake is fabulous for watersports, boat trips and wild swimming; the villa has its own bathing house right on the shore for guests to use

Lows

  • A car (or cars) are essential: while not remote, it’s a good 20-minute walk to the next town (the underground garage can fit eight vehicles and has a charging station)
  • Not all rooms have ensuites so be prepared to share bathrooms
  • No twin beds but the Pool House bedroom has two double beds in it

Best time to go

This area of Austria is a year-round destination. Spring and autumn are ideal for those who love exploring the great outdoors – boat trips, hikes, bike rides etc – while winter draws ski and snow enthusiasts to the powdery slopes nearby. Summer is often hot and sunny and is best for lake swimming and other water sports but is the most expensive and busiest time of year.

Our top tips

The best way to experience gorgeous Lake Hallstatt is to head to the small waterfront town of Hallstatt for a boat trip. You can also head inland for a few minutes from the centre of town to the romantic and photogenic Echern Valley with its magnificent waterfalls, rushing glacier streams, forests and meadows. Walk for as long or as little as you like along well-established hiking trails.

Rooms

The Hallstatt Villa consists of two buildings. The main house has three storeys – the ground floor features a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious dining area for 12, and a cosy living space with a tiled fireplace as well as a laundry room/boot room and toilet.

The bedrooms are arranged over the two top floors. Four bedrooms are on the middle floor and share a shower bathroom beside a separate toilet, and a lobby sofa with TV and board games. A covered veranda offers breathtaking sunset views. The two master bedrooms are found on the top floor, one with a balcony, the other with a standalone tub; these share a shower bathroom, again with a separate toilet.

The modern pool house, situated the other side of the heated pool, offers a sauna, shower bathroom and huge triple-height yoga space, and has two extra double beds on a mezzanine floor above.

The décor throughout is exceptional, probably best described as Bavarian-style chic. Cool muted colours, wooden flooring and exposed beams, cosy outsize sofa, crisp linens – all sympathetic to the historical nature of the place but utterly modern at the same time.
