Effortlessly cool beachside residences and glamping tents, with top-rated food and within walking distance of a buzzy coastal village

The quest to find an escape that ticks all the boxes is real, we know. So when we heard of what is seemingly the holy grail of seaside retreats, we wasted no time in adding it to our collection. Enter Ergon Beach House Nikiti, named after the pristine beach upon which it stands on the Sithonia peninsula in Halkidiki. You’re a 15-minute stroll from the charming and buzzy Nikiti, but you wouldn’t know it. This is a serene beachside retreat, designed to blend seamlessly with the nature that surrounds it.

Sleeping options range from elegant stone residences (sleeping 5), to luxe canvas glamping tents with magical open-sky rainfall showers. Some come with private plunge pools; all are beautifully styled in calming earthy hues and shaded by pine and eucalypt trees. Whichever you choose, expect to hear the waves lapping the shore from your supremely comfortable bed. While away the hours on your plush private beach lounger, swim in the clear turquoise sea, or join a Pilates class at sunrise. And you've deliciously fresh and tasty Grecian fare on offer – seafood and sustainability are the focus – with an onsite deli for picnics, Ergon Beach House may just have hit the sweet spot. We can’t wait to experience it for ourselves.

Highs

  • This is an excellent location, with a spectacular beach on the doorstep, woodland surrounds and a buzzy town within walking distance
  • A pleasing range of accommodation, all with private sit-outs, terraces or gardens. We particularly like the oh-so-chic stone suites and cottages
  • The food served at the hotel is top-notch, including the breakfast, showcasing fresh and local ingredients
  • Word is that the relaxed vibe here is something special
  • We’ve heard nothing but great things about the hotel staff

Lows

  • There’s no main pool, but some accommodation types come with private plunge pools, and you're right on the beach
  • There have been a few complaints about noise in the tented rooms from nearby neighbours and the bar during high season; some rooms/tents are situated quite close together
  • The beach isn’t private and can get a little busy during high season
  • No twin beds, but the cottages and suites have loft beds and sofa beds

Best time to go

The resort is open from mid-May through September. Summer in Halkidiki can be intensely hot - but it helps having plenty of shade and a beach on hand. If you're flexible, consider coming during the shoulder seasons of May and September. You'll find fewer crowds, speedier service in the restaurant, better rates - and lovely warm temperatures.

Rooms

Among the 36 rooms there are several different types of accommodation to choose from. At the top end are the luxurious and beautifully designed stone-walled suites and residences, which can sleep up to five with mezzanine loft beds and sofas for kids. If you can afford these, we think they're well worth the extra cost.

Next up, nestled among the trees, are rustic cabanas with wood and bamboo exteriors, all in varying sizes. And those feeling a little more adventurous might opt for cosy glamping tents with dreamy open-sky rainfall showers. We've heard some reports of noise travelling between the cabins and tents - worth bearing in mind.

Many of the above come with a private plunge pool and most have hammocks. All come with a private patio, a covered terrace for welcome shade during the summer day, and/or a Mediterranean scrub garden. You're also separated from your neighbour by bamboo hedges and screens. Expect calming natural textures and neutral tones. That and ridiculously comfy beds and decent coffee. This is about being at one with nature, without scrimping on luxuries.

Eating

Ergon Beach House knows its food - the company actually started out as an Athens-based deli. So local and delicious Greek fare is celebrated here, with most ingredients sustainably sourced from trusted local suppliers. Dining under whispering pines with the Aegean sea glistening beyond your table pretty much defines simple pleasure.

There's the main restaurant with tables under the trees, where seafood mezes and vibrant salads are served. They pride themselves on the freshest of fish, caught locally, and a slow food ethos when it comes to produce. For something a little lower-key, head to Balboa, the hotel’s chilled-out beach canteen, next to the cocktail bar, for succulent burgers, stuffed flatbreads and pizza.

You'll find breakfast under the pergola; expect variations on eggs, creamy yogurts, oats, sourdough bread sandwiches and specialty coffee.

And of course, there’s an onsite Ergon Deli selling excellent Greek delights such as olives, preserves and wine as well as homeware – perfect for picnics or to bring home as gifts.

Beyond the hotel, peruse the tavernas of nearby Nikiti where there are options aplenty.

Kids

Children of all ages are very welcome at Ergon Beach House. Parents take note that there isn’t a kids menu, but big hitters such as pizza and burgers are served at the beach bar, and baby food options can be prepared on request.

While the hotel isn’t brimming with kid-specific activities, you're right on a safe beach, there are nice touches such as the beachside playground and starlit beach cinema screenings.

Best for:

Babies (0-1 years), Children (4-12 years), Teens (over 12)

Family friendly accommodation:

Most of the rooms can accommodate families. While there is air con in all room types, the stone suites and villas are reportedly that bit cooler. For maximum luxury (and to win parenting points), we’d recommend opting for ones with a private plunge pool. Families of four or more should go for one of the Suites or the Residences, which all have gardens.
