Get set for designer glamping Scandi-style in these stunning cabins, encircled by forests and lakes, in an archipelago just south of Stockholm

In Swedish, the word ‘landet’ means countryside, but it also refers to the concept of slowing down, spending time with loved ones and appreciating the little things. And that's exactly what you'll experience at Landet Stay, a collection of contemporary luxury cabins nestling in a 400-hectare nature reserve.

The bustle of Stockholm may only be an hour to the north, but it feels worlds away when you're gazing out through floor-length windows at lush forest on all sides. This breathtaking landscape invites you to hike or bike among its natural wonders, or to swim in the sparkling cold water of nearby lakes, or to take a kayak or boat to the many neighbouring islands in Sweden’s largest archipelago.

The watchwords here are tranquillity, connection and sustainability. Each cabin has been carefully designed to be simple but comfortable, with pared-back interiors allowing the eye to drift to the beauty outside. At the same time, the materials, the construction system and the energy and plumbing systems reduce environmental impact. Cool and airy in spring and summer, cosy and warm with fires and stunning winterscapes in darker months, this is a stunning retreat into nature whatever the time of year.

Highs

  • A fantastic location: truly remote, but the picturesque town of Trosa is about 20 minutes away, while Stockholm lies an hour to the north
  • The emphasis on wellness – massages, yoga and meditation classes are available on request, and there’s also a wood-powered sauna
  • A private bay and swimming spot is just 300 metres from the cabins, and kayaks and paddleboards are free to borrow
  • Flexible sleeping arrangements to accommodate couples, groups and families (all cabins have sofabeds that convert to two singles)
  • Exemplary eco credentials - all cabins were built using a leave-no-trace concept, and the land will be returned to the wild after 15 years

Lows

  • A handful of additional cabins are currently under construction, and these will share the existing facilities on site
  • The wood-burning stoves and steps mean the cabins aren’t entirely toddler-proof, and there are no TVs for entertaining little ones - they can play in nature instead!
  • Though public transport is good, getting to and from nearby towns will probably require a car
  • It's a self check-in system, but the owners are on hand to help arrange food deliveries or activities

Best time to go

Landet is a year-round retreat, so when to go depends on what you want to do. July and August are the warmest months and are great for getting outdoors. It gets very cold and dark in the (long) winter, but the snowscapes are very pretty and peaceful. However, many people say May is the best time, when days are longer, nature is in bloom, it’s less busy in Trosa, and prices are more reasonable.

Our top tips

If you have a car, then the Utflyktsvägen (Excursion Road) is right next to Landet and is renowned as the best ‘road trip road’ in Sweden. The route stretches from Braviken to Stockholm’s southern archipelago and has over 100 tourist destinations along the way – everything from museums and castles to farm shops and nature reserves, as well as bathing spots and picnic areas, zoos and horse-riding. Just jump behind the wheel and follow the road!

Rooms

All four cabins are identical in size (40m2) and design, each standing on a low plinth to protect the ground below. Stained plywood covers the walls of the interior, broken only by the stainless steel of the kitchen. The outside cladding is of local pine tar. The colour scheme is chocolate and russet with some grey tones, but the emphasis is very much on minimalism and clean lines.

Each cabin can sleep up to four. All feature kingsize beds gazing out through picture windows, and ensuite bathrooms with showers (one has a bathtub), but there are also full-sized sofa beds in the living room which can sleep both children and adults. Every cabin has two private terraces so you can follow the sun (or shade) around the clock.

Other facilities include WiFi, air-con, fridge/freezer, hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine, as well as bathrobes and toiletries. But there are no TVs - it's all about being outdoors here.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Central heating
  • Fireplace
  • Hairdryer
  • Terrace/balcony
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

Eating

There is no restaurant on site, but the owners can arrange food delivery boxes featuring locally grown produce from nearby farms. A welcome basket includes your breakfast items - coffee, tea, milk, hams, cheeses and seasonal fruit. For further supplies, Trosa has a selection of supermarkets. Or you can order meals prepared by chefs at Fina Fisken in Trosa, a partner restaurant for Landet.

Trosa has a number of high-end eateries with an emphasis on seafood (cod and lobster especially), but there are also waffle houses, pizzerias, sushi outlets as well as traditional tavernas providing hearty Scandinavian fare, such as meatballs, herring and potatoes. Toast Skagen is ubiquitous (prawns in a creamy dill sauce on bread) as are smørrebrød (traditional Danish open sandwiches).

The Trosa Stadshotell is a famous fixture and Friday night meeting point. Its restaurant has been going for over 150 years and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Otherwise, head to the harbour, which is ringed with cafes and bars where you can enjoy a meal as the sun sets over the archipelago.

Features include:

  • Barbecue
  • Chef on request
  • Coffee maker
  • Dinner by arrangement
  • Dishwasher
  • Fridge
  • Full kitchen
  • Hob or stove
  • Lunch by arrangement
  • Microwave
  • Oven
  • Room service

Activities

  • It’s all about enjoying nature here, so hiking, biking, swimming, sailing, kayaking, golfing and exploring the local landscape are very much the focus of activity (Landet's kayaks, paddleboards and bicycles are free to borrow)
  • Then kick back in the sauna or huddle around the firepit at the end of an invigorating day
  • Trosa is a popular tourist destination, brimming with crafts, antiques and clothing boutiques as well as numerous artisanal food shops along its pretty, winding alleyways (there are also flea markets in the summer). The best places are situated along the Trosaån river
  • This is an area rich in heritage. The castles of Tullgarn and Nynäs are well worth a trip, as are a plethora of medieval churches dating back to the 1200s

All cabins are identical inside, with one double bedroom apiece, but the living rooms have large sofa beds that convert into two single beds. One travel cot is available on a first come, first served basis (no charge).
