Tucked quietly atop a modern office block, The Glenburn Penthouse is Kolkata’s first boutique hotel, yet it exudes an ageless elegance. Close to Maidan Park and the stunning Victoria Memorial palace, the hotel provides wonderful views of the cityscape – particularly spectacular from its sundeck and rooftop infinity pool. The décor is tasteful: antique maps and print collections grace the 9 gorgeous suites; there are vintage carpets in the sitting areas; marble terraces have white wicker chairs and ceiling fans; and the marble bathrooms are utterly pristine. We especially like the drawing room’s handmade ‘Hindoostan’ wallpaper, designed in Paris, depicting scenes of Indian rural life.
Breakfast and afternoon tea are included in the rate; there's also a daily changing menu of Bengali dishes for guests who wish to have lunch or dinner in the hotel. Guides are on-hand for private tours of the city's historic sites, museums, galleries, and textile markets, for those eager to explore Kolkata’s vibrant culture and exciting street life. The incredibly knowledgable and connected owners have created this perfect hideaway; you'll really appreciate returning to The Glenburn's graceful tranquility.

Our top tips
Visit Kolkata during Durga Puga in October – in celebration of the Hindu warrior goddess Durga. The city turns into a carnival for 5 days, with parades, light shows, street parties and bejewelled statues on display.
