A serene five-bedroom family home with a spectacular garden, pool and vineyard in the heart of Provence

A serene five-bedroom family home with a spectacular garden, pool and vineyard in the heart of Provence

Moritz’s family have been holidaying in this Provençal farmhouse for 50 years, and two years ago he decided to open the doors to visitors. All I can say is, lucky us. To describe the location as picturesque would be an understatement. Surrounded by vineyards and lush greenery studded with fragrant flowers, it’s breathtaking and oh so perfectly Provençal. Tucked in one of the most beautiful (and popular) corners of the Luberon, just 5 minutes outside the hilltop village of Bonnieux, and down the road from the chateau featured in the Russell Crowe film A Good Year, it feels surprisingly peaceful. The perfect private great value family retreat.

The farmhouse has all the character and charm of a family home, yet feels comfortably lived in without being overly personal. Upstairs are five romantic-rustic bedrooms, all with views out to the pond or vineyard. On the ground floor living spaces flow from lounges into dining rooms, under original beamed ceilings, with a grand piano here and a stone fireplace there, carved antique dressers and vintage wall hangings. My favourite part was the vast terrace, which is its heart and soul: overlooking a small lake and shaded by tall plane trees, it offers multiple al fresco dining and lounge settings. This is where all the living takes place, from crisp morning pastries to afternoon glasses of chilled rosé and leisurely home-cooked feasts.

Highs

  • It's close to some of the most beautiful villages in France including clifftop Gordes and postcard-pretty Lourmarin; lovely Bonnieux itself has cafes, restaurants and a weekly farmers market
  • What could be more special than sipping wine grown on your doorstep? Enjoy two gift bottles of the house wine on arrival for booking through i-escape
  • The tranquil swimming pool set in a meadow surrounded by trees
  • Beds are firm and comfortable, thanks to brand new mattresses dressed in crisp cotton bedding
  • It is all spotlessly clean, from the sparkling bathrooms to the scrubbed 200-year-old terracotta floor tiles

Lows

  • The decor is somewhat basic with mismatched glassware and cutlery, and slightly fraying furniture, but this is all part of the rustic farmhouse vibe
  • No air-conditioning but thick stone walls and timber shutters keep things cool in summer
  • There is only one rather small TV in the living room, which is not ideal for family movie nights
  • Only the Master bedroom is ensuite, the other four share two bathrooms
  • Note the sizeable end-of-stay cleaning fee

Best time to go

This house sparkles in the warmer months, from May to September, when you can take best advantage of the spacious outdoor terrace. The Provence Farmhouse is open all year.

Our top tips

The house has two grills, so make sure to set an evening aside to make good use of one or both. A huge outdoor BBQ overlooking the pond is perfect for summer nights, and the indoor charcoal stove is perfect for a cosy cook-in.

Rooms

All five bedrooms and three bathrooms are located on the first floor. The master (kingsize) bedroom has high wooden-beamed ceilings and windows on two sides, making it feel bright and spacious. This room has the only ensuite and it’s nicely renovated with a lovely claw-foot tub, plenty of space and (quite small) double sinks.

Three more bedrooms have windows opening to views of the pond. The first room directly next to the master has a large super king bed that can be split into generous singles. The next room has a queen bed, and the one after that (recently renovated) also has a king bed. The fifth and final bedroom is across the hall with a sweet antique double bed and views of the vineyards.

Two bathrooms are shared by these four bedrooms: one at the top of the stairs (also newly renovated) has a walk-in shower and separate toilet. A second bathroom is in original condition and has both shower and tub and its own toilet. There's also a guest toilet on the ground floor.

Eating

The kitchen is well equipped, with a large fridge (including an ice-maker), dishwasher and plenty of pans and utensils for cooking. The hob has 6 gas rings, and there's also a blender and mixer, making cooking easy for a larger party. The equipment is not top of the range but perfectly functional – and particularly useful for a more relaxed approach to meals such as assembling salads or prepping for a barbecue. And if coffee is critical component for your morning, you're in clover: there's a Nespresso machine, a French press and an Italian espresso maker to choose from.

Basics (coffee, tea, spices, oil) are supplied on arrival and several large supermarkets are 15 mins away by car (Apt or Coustellet). The small grocery shop in Bonnieux village (15 mins' walk) is useful for essentials, and there's an excellent butcher selling house-made cold cuts and local cheeses, plus several casual cafes and bistros for easy meals, as well as a great pizzeria. Goult (10 mins' drive) has a great bakery, and there are fantastic outdoor weekly markets here, including an epic one in Apt every Saturday.

Feel like a fancy meal? A professional caterer can be arranged. Or book a table at the Michelin-starred Ju restaurant in Bonnieux, which offers a great value three-course set menu at lunch. Other worthwhile options in the village itself include Les Eydins, La Coquillade and La Capelongue; La Bastide (1 Michelin star) and La Table des Amis (2 stars) are within an 8-minute drive of the house.
