Moritz’s family have been holidaying in this Provençal farmhouse for 50 years, and two years ago he decided to open the doors to visitors. All I can say is, lucky us. To describe the location as picturesque would be an understatement. Surrounded by vineyards and lush greenery studded with fragrant flowers, it’s breathtaking and oh so perfectly Provençal. Tucked in one of the most beautiful (and popular) corners of the Luberon, just 5 minutes outside the hilltop village of Bonnieux, and down the road from the chateau featured in the Russell Crowe film A Good Year, it feels surprisingly peaceful. The perfect private great value family retreat.
The farmhouse has all the character and charm of a family home, yet feels comfortably lived in without being overly personal. Upstairs are five romantic-rustic bedrooms, all with views out to the pond or vineyard. On the ground floor living spaces flow from lounges into dining rooms, under original beamed ceilings, with a grand piano here and a stone fireplace there, carved antique dressers and vintage wall hangings. My favourite part was the vast terrace, which is its heart and soul: overlooking a small lake and shaded by tall plane trees, it offers multiple al fresco dining and lounge settings. This is where all the living takes place, from crisp morning pastries to afternoon glasses of chilled rosé and leisurely home-cooked feasts.

Highs
- It's close to some of the most beautiful villages in France including clifftop Gordes and postcard-pretty Lourmarin; lovely Bonnieux itself has cafes, restaurants and a weekly farmers market
- What could be more special than sipping wine grown on your doorstep? Enjoy two gift bottles of the house wine on arrival for booking through i-escape
- The tranquil swimming pool set in a meadow surrounded by trees
- Beds are firm and comfortable, thanks to brand new mattresses dressed in crisp cotton bedding
- It is all spotlessly clean, from the sparkling bathrooms to the scrubbed 200-year-old terracotta floor tiles
Lows
- The decor is somewhat basic with mismatched glassware and cutlery, and slightly fraying furniture, but this is all part of the rustic farmhouse vibe
- No air-conditioning but thick stone walls and timber shutters keep things cool in summer
- There is only one rather small TV in the living room, which is not ideal for family movie nights
- Only the Master bedroom is ensuite, the other four share two bathrooms
- Note the sizeable end-of-stay cleaning fee
Best time to go
This house sparkles in the warmer months, from May to September, when you can take best advantage of the spacious outdoor terrace. The Provence Farmhouse is open all year.
Our top tips
The house has two grills, so make sure to set an evening aside to make good use of one or both. A huge outdoor BBQ overlooking the pond is perfect for summer nights, and the indoor charcoal stove is perfect for a cosy cook-in.
