The gentle tolling of a Tibetan gong marks the beginning of your Wirdana journey and affords a first glimpse at the hotel’s atmospheric spa. Relaxation and pampering are the main focus of this modernist Italian-owned hotel a kilometre or so inland from the sun-baked south coast. The spacious grounds house 4 villas and 4 rooms, as well as a large pool, spa and restaurant area, whose Asian fusion menu attracts outside guests, too. Couples and families with older children feel most at home here, and the set-up of the rooms works well for groups travelling together.
Interiors are stylish and minimalist - a contemporary take on Sri Lankan design, characterised by deep open verandas, honey-coloured timber furnishings and wall-mounted Balinese basketry. The hotel’s rural setting is extremely tranquil and as you relax on kingsize daybeds beneath swaying coconut palms, birdsong serenades you. It’s a welcome respite from the busier coastal areas yet these are all still very easily accessible. Spend a morning exploring atmospheric Galle Fort or spotting wildlife on the serene Gin Ganga River, then retreat back to Wirdana for an indulgent massage, scrub or Tibetan ‘singing bowl’ meditation.

Lows

Best time to go
The best/driest weather is from late December to April, though this is also the region’s high season so you could consider visiting in the shoulder season of mid-April to early May or during late July and August when showers but not monsoon rains can be expected. The hotel makes a good base for dipping in and out of Galle’s January Literary Festival.
Our top tips
The palm-shaded grounds are visited by numerous bird species, and after the rains or in the early morning, keen birders can identify a real variety.
